Your Future starts here

A Research Fellow position is available within the £10 M Centre for Functional Materials Design funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The postholder will act as Theme Leader in the area of Robotics and Intelligent Automation.

You will pro-actively progress this research theme, using your own initiative and knowledge and through discussion with the Centre Director, Professor Cooper, and the broader community of researchers in the Centre. You will be expected to perform research at internationally leading level and ensure that other researchers, and particularly PhD students, are working in an optimal way and communicating across boundaries. This is not a standard research project, but rather a 10-year research centre with the ambitious aim of fundamentally transforming our capability to discover new functional materials.

This post will suit an ambitious individual motivated to design and implement state of the art robotics technologies to be utilise in chemical laboratories. This will enable a step-change in new materials discovery and continue building on our concept of ‘mobile robot scientists’ (Nature, 2020, 583, 237; youtu.be/ehjMBDFhZ5A). You should have a PhD in Computer Science, Engineering or Physical Sciences, with a commitment to developing collaborative research. Applicants will be evaluated not only through publication record, but also based on demonstration of hands-on skills that are relevant to the post, plus enthusiasm and aptitude for team building. Candidates may come from either an academic or an industry background, providing that skills and motivation align.

The level of research performed and the experience offered in engaging with senior UK and international partners makes this post highly suitable for a transition to an independent academic career. Our goal is a diverse and integrated team that will allow this centre to succeed, rather than to appoint individuals based on a narrow list of technical requirements. Your application should therefore set out how your skills, experience and capabilities will contribute to the success of the centre at all levels. The post is available for 5 years.
